Times have changed and winds have shifted, but the Palace on Wheels cruises along in royal style, the kind only the Maharajas of yesteryear could have perpetuated and enjoyed. Today, of course, each traveller on board is treated like royalty in his or her own right.

The passenger coaches which were originally meant to be the personal railway coaches of the erstwhile rulers of princely states of Rajputana, Gujarat, the Nizam of Hyderabad and the Viceroy of British India. These coaches were not being used by the Indian Railways after independence in normal passenger trains on account of very rich and traditional interiors.

The name "Palace-on-Wheels" (POW) was derived from its royal back-ground of the coaches. A new meter gauge air conditioned Palace-on-Wheels was introduced in 1984 & had 13 Saloons, 2 Restaurant cum Kitchen car, one Bar cum Lounge and 4 Service Cars. In order to further increase the amenities on the train and due to over all gauge conversion in the state, a new broad gauge Palace-on-Wheels has been constructed & has been running since 1996. It's 14 Saloons are inter-connected, the interiors of the saloons reflect the aesthetics of the former Royal states of Rajasthan. The exquisite and exclusive Palace on Wheels has luxurious Cabins, wall to wall carpeting, a well stocked bar, two dining cars (The Maharaja and Maharani) and a very personalized service... in fact, almost everything that could comprise of heaven on earth for seven days !


In the past 20 years of operations, the Palace-on-Wheels has been rated as one of the best ten luxurious rail journeys in the world.Palace on Wheels and the facilities on board the train are marked by affluence and exuberance. The train is self-sufficient with all the modern amenities.

However, the décor speaks of the culturally rich past of Rajasthan. The paintings, carved furniture and elegant handicrafts represent Rajasthan's fascinating heritage of art and craftsmanship. Period furniture and the elaborate costumes of the attendants make up the royal ambience.

Dining "Palace on Wheels"
The Maharaja and Maharani restaurants offer seating arranged in groups of twos and fours near the windows. Chefs in the attached pantry prepare Continental and Indian specialities, with an emphasis on the cuisine of Rajasthan.

Bar "Palace on Wheels"
The bar-lounge is embellished in period furniture, created especially for this coach. The bar has ample space and choice of soft and alcoholic beverages on offer.

Bed Room "Palace on Wheels"
The 14 Saloons are made up of 104 passenger berths in Twin Bedded Cabins. A third bed, for an additional person, or an accompanying child, is in the form of a fold-away bed on a higher tier. Each compartment has an attached bath with running hot/cold water and showers, built-in wardrobes, overhead and night lights, piped music, reading lights etc.

Lounge "Palace on Wheels"
At the end of each coach is a separate lounge where passengers can relax when they wish to move out of their bedrooms. Here they can unwind with a book or magazine, engage in conversation, or simply watch the panoramic vista of the great Indian country side. Royal Orient, a magnificent luxury train of India is rated among the most prestigious and luxurious trains of the world. The facilities available on board are of very high standards with all the comforts of the best of five-star hotel. Well equipped with modern amenities like intercom, channel music, TV, DVD and massage-cum-beauty parlor among many others, a travel on the Royal Orient surely provides its passengers a wonderful experience.

On Board FacilitiesThe train has 14 marvelous, exquisite, gold extrusive saloon cars each attached with 4 three-bedded cabins. Every cabin is well decorated and tailored in elegance. They are attached with luxurious baths with the facility of showers with hot and cold running water. Each saloon has a reception room, for relaxation and recreation and is equipped with the facility of television and VCD. All cabins are also facilitated with channel music and intercom.

Accommodationcabins of the Royal orient are well furnished, even better than many 5 star hotels. Though there is provision for three passengers in one cabin generally, two passengers are accommodated in each cabin taking view of privacy of couples. There is a well-equipped toilet with hot and cold baths between two cabins. For each coach two attendants are at your service round the clock to take care of all your requirements.

Dining FacilitiesThe Royal Orient has restaurants cars attached to it, serving you delicious and exotic traditional Gujarati, Rajasthani, Indian, Chinese and Continental foods. Your breakfast is served in the lounge or in the cabin itself. The pantry has a menu, which includes the vegetarian as well as non-vegetarian cuisine along with hot and cold beverages.

Bar Facilities'The Watering Hole' Bar is an added attraction on the train and is well stocked with varieties of scotch, Indian malt whiskies, liquors, wines, vodkas and rums. Beer is also served in the cabins or in the restaurant. Lounge FacilitiesThe Royal Orient has a total of fourteen fully air-conditioned saloons and two dining cars. A comfortable lounge is attached at the end of each saloon. Here passengers can relax, enjoy music of their choice, read journals and magazines and interact with fellow travelers. The lounge is also fitted with TV & VCR. The lounge provides you a beautiful view of countryside during the daytime travel.

Royal Orient 

The Royal Orient is one of the most lavish, luxurious and prestigious trains of the world. Developed on the lines of famous Palace On wheels, it was started as a joint effort between the Tourist Corporation of Gujarat Limited and the Indian railways during 1994-95. The coaches being used for the Royal Orient were the replacement rake for the ageing Palace on Wheels rolling stock But this new ICF(Integral Coach Factory) built replacement rake was rendered useless due to some reasons. And the Gujarat Tourism and Indian Railways decided to run it as the Royal Orient. The livery was changed to a blue scheme. The Royal Orient rake is maintained at the Western Railway workshops located at Ajmer. The coaches of the Royal Orient are fully decorated with all the comforts of the best of five-star hotels with a bar and a multicuisine restaurant on board. Well equipped with modern amenities like intercom, channel music, TV, DVD and massage-cum-beauty parlor among many others, a travel on the Royal Orient surely provides its passengers a wonderful experience. Shekhawati Region

Rajasthan's Open-Air Art Gallery
No other region in India, or perhaps, even in the world, has such a large concentration of high quality frescoes as the region of Shekhawati. In the beginning, this semi-arid region had only its blank monochromatic palette to offer. No school of painting thrived till history and circumstances took up this colorless page and made it blossom with art for almost two centuries - from 1750 to 1930. Today, this region is commonly called this 'open-air art gallery of Rajasthan'.

Come on board the Heritage on Wheels and relive the past on a moving experience for three nights four days, twice a week from Jaipur or on a holiday package ex Delhi also twice a week.

Truly unforgettable !!! Facilities The Heritage on wheels comprises of 14 coaches including one restaurant and a bar lounge. The train is fully air-conditioned. However, there would be no facility of attached toilets in the cabin. In every coach there are two toilets shared by four cabins occupants.
