Varanasi Shopping                                           Book Your Trip

Shopping in Varanasi is indeed a unique experience. Being one of the oldest cities in India, it seems to be the treasure house of Indian Tradition and Culture.

To begin with, Benarasi Silk sarees form and indespensable part of Indian Culture  with its wonderful zari and silver brocade work. The sarees are said to haved passed from one generation to the next without loosing its originality and charm. It is still a part of Indian Bride's trousseu. Strikingly smooth and vibrant colours almost epitomize the feminine grace. Do not forget to pick up one or two Benarasi Sarees while shopping in Varanasi.

Other shopping attractions are the beautiful hand knotted Carpets from Mirzapur. The art originated from the court craftsmen of the Mughals and have been passed from generations to generations like the silk sarees. It is truly one of the best buys with its mesmerizing designs in ivory and soft greens with a contrast border.

Apart from the illustrated fabrics one can always pick up small sandstone items like ashtrays, candlestands, penstands, copperwares and brasswares, glass bangles, masks of Hindu and Buddhist deities, costume jewelleries as gifts and souvenirs.A majority of carpets exported from India come from Varanasi and its neighboring areas. This carpet belt specializes in traditional Indian woolen carpets and Durries. The Bhadohi carpets match the gracefulness of carpet weaving in any part of the world and are distinguished for their beauty and elegance and are worth buying. For carpet lovers the Varanasi-Bhadohi-Mirzapur belt offers great shopping opportunities as the carpets are not only cheaper yet stylish and fashion oriented. The Varanasi-Bhadohi-Mirzapur belt also produces hand tufted, Indo-Tibetan and low, medium and high Knotted Carpets.

Other shopping attractions of Varanasi include the hand-knotted carpets of Mirzapur, musical instruments, the 'khatta-meetha' (sweet 'n' sour) 'Langda Aam', a popular variety of mangoes available during summer season and the famous betel leaf that is considered a specialty of the place. Benarasi people can be seen chewing betel leaves as a part of their cultural upbringing and they even welcome their guests by offering them the famous betel leaves.

The shopping hotspots in Varanasi are Chowk, Gyan Vapi, Vishwanath Gali, Thatheri Bazar, Lahurabir, Godoulia or Dashswamedh Gali and Golghar. Besides the illustrious and fine silks and brocaded fabrics, one can also buy shawls, carpets, wall hangings, Zari work; stone inlay work, glass beads and bangles, masks of Hindu and Buddhist deities and lampshades. However, one has to be on watch while buying silk saris and beware of the imitations that are much cheaper than the real silk ones but are not so easy to distinguish.

One can also buy 'kamandalam' or brass water pot from Varanasi, which is often used by saints to carry water. People buy bottled 'Ganga jal' or jerrycans from the riverbank too for religious purposes or to be used as Holy Water in various rituals. Besides, people can also take water of Ganges themselves from the river.
